Brookdale Center
Brookdale Center opened in 1962 in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. The three original anchors were JCPenney's, Sears, & Woolworth's. Five years later, the Brooklyn Center location of Woolworth's closed down. The location was made into many smaller stores.
In 2004, Brookdale had a major renovation which added a modern food court, a Barnes and Noble, AJ Lomax Famous Labels, and a few more small tenants. In 2005, JCPenney's announced that they would move their Brooklyn Center location to nearby Maple Grove so that they could get a bigger store in a newer mall, Grove Square. Steve & Barry's filled the location for three years before closing in 2008 permanently. Brookdale Center was losing business with a 50% vacany. The worst of any mall in Minnesota. Following the decline of business was the closed doors of Barnes and Noble, Macy's, AJ Lomax, and many other smaller stores. The only original store left was Sears. On April 26, 2010, Brookdale announced it would close the doors that day. After being empty for over a year, in August 2011, demolition of Brookdale started. In the mall's place currently, is a Walmart Super-Center, which is next to Sears and across the street from Kohl's. The mall was renamed Shingle Creek Crossing and is currently being redeveloped. |
